The picture became complete with the decision of the central authorities concerning the location of the capital of the Central Industrial Region in Sandomierz, which caused an additional boom visible in almost all spheres of life. This lively development of the city was broken, however, by World War II.
A great, modern city, which Sandomierz was to become one day, remained only in the sphere of not realized plans. Sandomierz was not given a chance to use its own historic opportunity of great progress that had been depicted in the plans of creating the Central Industrial Region. World War II did not bring immediate destructions to the city. Sandomierz was liberated on 18th August 1944 by the Soviet army of the II Ukrainian Frontline.
Today, Sandomierz is a an administrative district in the Swietokrzyskie Province being a kind of a historical and architectural museum in the open air which has been enriched by each passing epoch leaving here over 120 antique buildings – traces of all styles. The architectural beauty in conjunction with the beauty of landscape, wonderful lush vegetation and picturesque location - on seven hills cut through by deep ravines, makes Sandomierz a great tourist attraction.
